Renovating 95 apartments within a historic, ten-story building while keeping residents in place required careful coordination throughout construction. Southway renovated Alexander House, a Renaissance Revival building constructed in 1928 to provide housing for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. The property also encompasses more than 30,000 square feet of commercial and community space, adding to the complexity of coordinating work throughout the occupied building.
The renovation included new windows, doors, cabinets, appliances, bathtubs, air-conditioning units, and fire and sprinkler systems. Southway also completed historic exterior improvements, including masonry cleaning and repairs, limestone facade restoration, and restoration of arched wood windows. Accessibility improvements included converting six units to UFAS-compliant apartments, creating two units for residents with hearing and visual impairments, and reconfiguring the laundry room, common areas, and entrances to meet ADA requirements.
Completed while the property remained operational, the renovation modernized the residential community, improved accessibility, and restored key historic features throughout the building.
