The historic South Car Works has been a cornerstone of American railroading since 1869. As the centerpiece of the Museum’s Campus Transformation Plan, its restoration demands a thoughtful balance between preserving history and preparing the campus for the 200th anniversary of American railroading.

Southway is leading the complex restoration, carefully integrating modern museum amenities while honoring the building’s historic character. The project reorients the museum entrance toward Southwest Baltimore and creates immersive opportunities for learning through interactive exhibits, expanded educational and archival spaces, and the CSX Bicentennial Garden — a new tiered amphitheater and plaza designed to enrich the visitor experience.
